Resume format and some pointers for the search

Contributed by Pratik Poddar: Do not attach .doc resumes, .docx resumes.Do not use proprietary format. Formatting is totally ruined when you open a .doc file with open office.

Personally, I would also suggest the following:

1. Avoid writing the text resume below the cover letter that you mail profs. The first glance of your mail would look really daunting. In addition, the formatting of the text resume might change quite a bit too. So, create a link of your pdf resume and provide the link in the mail. [Opinions are quite varied in this aspect. This is what I had done and it worked well for me]

2. To find profs relevant to your interests, you could use Google scholar - on entering your topic/field of interest, you get dozens of papers relevant to the field. Alongside, you get the names of the authors too. You could google for the homepages of the authors. Note that many of them could be PhD students/ Post docs ! So please go through the homepages carefully before mailing.
